This automatic gear selection is facilitated by an electronic module integrated within the transmission.
Given this efficiency and speed in gear changes, the DSG transmission is generally preferred on performance models such as the Golf GTI, for instance. Vehicles designed for a more refined driving experience, as with the Tiguan’s technical specifications, benefit from the new fluid and smooth 8-speed automatic gearbox.
Although all of these are dual clutch gearboxes, they differ in terms of types and usage. The Volkswagen DSG transmission is renowned for its versatility, as it can be either dry clutch (e.g., DSG7 DQ200) or wet (e.g., DSG6, DQ250 or DQ381), adapting to various vehicle types and application ranges.
Like any mechanical component, certain issues can occur with a DSG gearbox, such as jerking, getting stuck in neutral, or other anomalies. However, these issues are often easy to prevent with regular maintenance, as they are generally due to inadequate fluid levels or contamination.
In terms of maintenance and service, an oil change along with a filter replacement is recommended for wet Volkswagen DSG gearboxes every 60,000 km, although this may vary depending on the model and driving conditions.
